In 2012, we co-founded Collect Scotland as we wanted to promote Scottish textile design internationally. We exhibited in Paris at Première Vision for four years with an evolving collective of designers born or based in Scotland.

SAMPLE was curated by ourselves (Yvonne Elliott-Kellighan and Marion Parola) as well as Mhari McMullan and Chloë Highmore, our partners on this venture.

The exhibition featured a retrospective of work produced by Collect members for the Collect studio portfolio, which had previously been exhibited at Première Vision, Paris but not at home in Scotland until 2017. Our diverse client list included Nike, Whistles, IKEA, Converse and Paperchase.

SAMPLE also showcased specially commissioned pieces from 15 current or past members of Collect Scotland:

Lorna Brown, Susan Castillo, Alice Dansey-Wright, Joanna Dixon, Rachel Duckhouse, Hazel Dunn, Yvonne Elliott-Kellighan, Chloë Highmore, Vanessa Hindshaw, Lyndsay Mackie, Mhari McMullan, Ruth Mitchell, Marie O'Connor, Marion Parola and Natasha Samasuwo.

The exhibition aimed to shine a light on the anonymous and hidden discipline of textile design, an industry where designers are not always credited for commercial work. These designs had been created in response to five trends identified by Collect: Chiaroscuro, Earthly Paradise, Cut and Paste, Emotional Landscape and Remembered Dreams.
